NeoVPN specifications
Our secure VPN solution is comprised of 3 product offerings:
- NeoVPN – Intranet
- NeoVPN – Extranet
- NeoVPN – Internet access
The service offers capacity with transmission speeds of 64 Kbit/s to 1 Gbit/s as standard with Ethernet handoff.
NeoVPN allows you to define bandwidth and traffic requirements by application within Classes of Service, ensuring delivery of higher priority traffic ahead of lower priority traffic while providing a minimum bandwidth per class. Classification of your traffic is done on your router by defining 4 classes of service (3 data traffic classes and 1 voice traffic class) and assigning a Committed Data Rate (CDR) for each application class. We apply multiple traffic engineering techniques to each Class of Service (CoS) in order to assure Quality of Service (QoS) for the applications. The management of latency and bandwidth is done by applying the QoS techniques per CoS on the network, including:
- Classification/Setting of IP precedence bits/marking
- Traffic policing and Traffic shaping
- Queuing mechanisms
- Congestion control
- Traffic engineering
The above is executed by Neotel.
Classes of services
This secure VPN solution is offered with 4 Classes of services:
- CoS 1 - Designed for voice: strict-priority, low-latency, guaranteed delivery.
- CoS 2 - Designed for premium business applications: high-priority, low-latency.
- CoS 3 - Designed for standard business applications: guaranteed-delivery.
- CoS 4 - Designed for best effort traffic, low-priority.

Global managed IP solutions: NeoVPN Global and NeoInternet
Global Managed IP Solution: NeoVPN Global
NeoVPN Global, a best-in-class Multi Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) network, is designed to deliver the most advanced international MPLS solution across a variety of access mechanisms. With a footprint on 6 continents, NeoVPN Global offers a cost-effective and secure means of transmitting data anywhere in the world.
NeoVPN Global Specifications
The network shares a common MPLS core consisting of carrier-class devices, which are installed and commissioned in a dual-plane architecture and are replicated at critical locations to avoid any single point of failure across the networks.
In South Africa, the NeoVPN Global service makes use of our Next Generation Network in the 4 major cities, from where NeoVPN Global services are offered, each of which have multiple PoPs. Our international Cisco network uses carrier-class devices, such as GSRs, 76xx devices in the core and 72xx devices at the remote locations.
Services Supported: The services offered are Layer 3 VPNs. The MPLS VPNs supported by NeoVPN Global international MPLS network are based on RFC 2547bis/RFC 4364.
VPN Topology: Each customer site has at least one physical link connecting the Client Provider Edge (CPE) to the Provider Edge (PE) on the network, while the network allows communication only between sites that are explicitly allowed.
The following topologies are supported on the Layer 3 VPNs:
- Hub and Spoke
- Full Mesh VPNs
- Complex
- Extranet
Routing Protocols Supported: Our international MPLS network supports the following type of CE-PE routing:
- Static Routing
- RIP
- eBGP
- OSPF
- EIGRP
The recommended options are Static and eBGP.
Redundancy/Backup Options for Local Loops: Last mile failures are the most common cause of connectivity failure on networks. Multiple redundancy/backup options of dual last mile and disparate dual services are available on the international MPLS network, to guard against last mile failure.
NeoVPN Global Classes of Service
NeoVPN Global supports 4 distinct Classes of Service (CoS) and also allows for interclass of service bursting, which means that other classes can use the unconsumed bandwidth of another class of service. This applies to all CoS except CoS-1, where no bursting is allowed beyond the contracted speed.
This classification system allows for information being transmitted through the network to be prioritised according to the service selected. We will tailor the services according to your specific business requirements, giving you the best mix of CoS to suit your business, each with its own service level offering.

Wireless vs. Wireline
| Wireless |
Wireline |
- Deployed within 7 working days regardless of distance if feasibility has been established.
|
- Deployment time of infrastructure required highly dependent on distance and the complexity of the infrastructure that will be crossed (such as roads, pavements, water pipes, etc.).
|
- Limited SLA flexibility – due to limited frequency assigned by regulator & capital constraints to duplicate infrastructure.
|
- Highly flexible SLA – dual building entries, dual paths, dual PoPs and variations thereof.
|
- Easily relocated – only dependent on coverage.
|
- Cannot be relocated – a customer's relocation implies new installation dependent on feasibility.
|
- Minimal customer impact – subscriber station has a small footprint.
|
- Possibly substantial customer impact – trenching.
|
- Limited points of failure (last mile through space).
|
- More points of failure (vulnerable last mile).
|
- Small installation charge.
|
- Substantial installation charge.
|
- Affected by atmospheric conditions.
|
- Not affected by atmospheric conditions.
|
|
|
- Ethernet and serial interfaces.
|
- Saleable circuit throughput per customer dependent on base station capacity.
|
- Saleable circuit throughput per customer dependent on equipment installed at customer premises.
