As South Africa’s first converged network operator, we are passionate about bringing communication solutions to our customers. But that is not all we are passionate about. Our team is committed to making a significant contribution to the social and economic Development of the communities in which we conduct our business and to improving the future prospects of these people, especially young people. This portfolio is an important Neotel initiative and will always be part of the companys growth.

Community relations initiatives

From a community relations perspective, every Neotel employee is a participant. A recent drive to collect clothes for the needy, resulted in 50 boxes of clothes being donated to Friends for Life, an organisation that supports orphans and other people affected by HIV/Aids in Alexandra, Cape Town and KwaZulu-Natal.

Further support provided to this organisation, included a toy drive for orphans and a Christmas Party. Initiatives, such as the afore-mentioned, have been extended to business partners, which have resulted in significant cash collections. These donations were donated to the Friends for Life charity and I-Care, a Durban-based organisation.

Further community relations initiatives include:

  • World Aids Day
  • Casual Day
  • Adhoc projects and South Afican supported national initiatives

Neotel Academy

In 2007, the Neotel Academy was launched with 10 learners as part of a pilot programme. The full academy was launched in March 2008 when 27 learners were enrolled. This programme has now been completed and all of the participants are now part of Neotel, as interns. The 2009/2010 programme aims to put 30 learners through the course, with representation from 7 of the 9 provinces. The training will be conducted in Johannesburg and the course covers both theory and practical – it is our aim to have a 30/70 split between theory and practical respectively. The academy is run by Nemisa (National Electronic media institute of South Africa ) and some of our business partners have become involved by providing access to curricula and materials.

The objective of the Neotel Academy is to develop a pool of expertise in the telecoms sector in collaboration with individual partners, therefore creating benefit for the sector at large. The programme is run in close collaboration with and is accredited by ISETT Seta. In association with Nemisa, we are in the process of doing a course alignment to ensure the qualification is the equivalent of NQF5. The reason is that there is currently no telecoms qualification at that level. Entry into the programme is an S5 and N6 engineering qualification.

We aim to enhance the academy’s curriculum to reach NQF5 level in the future. That means as part of their entry requirements, learners will have to have a telecoms practitioners’ qualification. We are also planning on increasing the level of collaboration with Further Education and Training Colleges (FETs) to allow them to offer the course nationally in future. This project is much broader than the scope of our license obligations to increase the impact we have on society.

Our vision is not just to create workers, but to empower people. We plan to expand the academy to include entrepreneurial development, to assist new and existing entrepreneurs to create employment, rather than just trying to get employment.

Neotel sponsored Internet Café in Alexandra

We recently opened an internet cafe in Alexandra Township, one of the most disadvantaged townships in South Africa. We chose Alexandra as it has been identified as urban renewal node by the Government. It is an underserved area with limited ICT facilities and is the first of many social investment projects we will be implementing in the underserved areas.
